Auf Wiedersehn Ajica (1988-2011) Part 1

Thursday, November 10, 2011
It took me 3 months to gather all the willpower to write this article down. To make matters more complicated, i can't make up my mind either to choose to post it under an official or personal post.

In the end i decided to do both, my apologies for not being able to notify the situation earlier...i even begged Rose not to say or write anything about it and waited until i am ready enough to announce it myself.

Sadly, i would like to notify friends, distant families and friends that Ajica [the youngest sister of the Lim's spouses] my sister [colleagues and member of the AIC] had passed away on the 29th of July 2011 at the age of 22 due to untreated brain tumor. Below, in chronological order of the events following her hospitalisation, death and funeral service.

Again, i am terribly sorry for the late announcement, i barely the strength to even type this down.

CHRONOLOGY

18th July 2011: Ajica's went home. She applied for a short one week holiday simply stating that she need a little break from work.

No abnormalities spotted for the next 3 days, until she was found collapsed on the kitchen floor at late afternoon of the 21st. She was rushed to the hospital.

22nd July 2011: Fall into a state of coma. Thorough scans is underway, close distanced relatives had been notified.

23nd July 2011: Scan images from the brain indicates that Ajica carries an index fingered sized tumor. The doctor suggest an immediate surgery, however was unable to proceed due to lack of brain surgical experts. Preparations to rushed her to the Main General Hospital via air is being arranged for tomorrow. Family members are advised to travel earlier to settle the paperwork that needs to be done before the patient arrives. We leave for the capital at night and arrived at midnight.

24th of July 2011: The medical helicopter was scheduled to arrive at 11.00AM. Regrettably due to bad weather condition across the skies of Sibu, the pilot refuses to proceed with the flight and pulled back. The procedure was postponed for a day until the weather condition changes for the better.

25th of July 2011: Another attempt was aborted due to bad weather. The second and last attempt for the day was made late in the evening but also ended in a failure. Ajica is still unconscious and untreated.

26th of July 2011: News of Ajica reaches Rose in Southampthon. She requested that Ajica to be sent using an ambulance. The hospital rejected her ideas  By now Ajica is relying fully on the life support system.

27th of July 2011: The doctor announced that Ajica chances of living is now slim. I've memorised his statement to this day that "for her [Ajica] to survive, we need a powerful magic spell."

28th of July 2011: Ajica is stable but still unconscious. The nurse does their daily check ups and changing her IV's. There are no other treatment and no more news about rushing her to the Main General Hospital.

29th of July 2011: Family and friends gathered for a silent morning prayer. Rose still tries to bargain for an ambulance with the hospital administration. Ajica's condition started to deteriorate around 2.00PM and passed away at 2.13PM

30th of July 2011: Ajica funeral ceremony. The family agrees that like our late father and older brother, she would be cremated and her ashes to be distributed between three major family members.

31th of July 2011: Ajica remains are being brought back to her place of ancestry: Hukou, Taiwan and Shirataka [Yamagata Prefecture], Japan. Her memorial plaque however, remains here.

I would like to thank those who had come to our aide, in material means and moral support. Again, for those who had just received the news [mainly members of AIC] i am terribly sorry about the late announcement.

I still don't believe that things just ends the was it were. We have a lot of time and given a lot of chances to save a life if only we are dedicated to do so without to much of a red tape and life threatening procedures.

The hospital wasted precious days just to get their huwey flying where else if they already send her in via ambulance after the failure of the first flight and bad weather forecast, maybe...just maybe Ajica might be still with us right now.

Imagine 4 days of delays...even a crawling ambulance can reach the Main General Hospital in less than 4 days.

My gut feeling still say she's got a chance if not for those screw ups hospital management. I still feels like suing them for negligence.

I am truly thankfull for your effort in trying to reason with the hospital management.

Maybe it's fate but, the sad part is that nobody tried as hard as we expected for people who are supposed to save lives.
